Protagonists and Obsessions

March 16, 2012

In Patrick White’s Nobel Prize-winning novel VOSS, one of the characters says, “Every man has his own obsession.”

In my newly-published novel THE PROVIDER, almost all of the characters have an obsession. It is their pursuit of the American Dream. This obsession takes many shapes and is examined from many different angles.

In considering my other novels and short stories, I say that the protagonists all have obsessions. I believe this is a good way to approach the writing of any character, that is, determining what the obsession is.

Outside of novels in the real world, do not most of us own at least one obsession. For those who do not make this claim, my regrets and sympathy. These people may be deprived of a certain passion that gives life vitality and drive.
