Writing Is Fun. If Not, to Hell with It.

Out there in web-land is a list of “Thirty Tips by Famous Authors.” I should add that many, even most of these authors, are not only famous but great writers. This kind of a list is always good reading for writers.   Yet, I was most charmed by James Patterson’s entry–and ironically I have never read any of his works. He says, “I’m always pretending that I’m sitting across from somebody. I’m telling them a story, and I don’t want them to get up until it’s finished.” This charms me because Patterson  makes writing sound like fun, as if the writer is having an intimate conversation with the reader. Regardless of how much effort is required in the writing process, if it isn’t fun, then (to quote Jonathan Franzen) “to hell with it.”
