In reading ELIA KAZAN; A LIFE, permit me to share the following:
ON DIRECTING – Elia Kazan
I was to find out later that playwrights nearly always blame someone else for their failure –the cast or the leading actors or even the scenery. But in time I was also to learn the tough lesson that it’s always the play. I’ve heard of “Streetcar Named Desire” done by a dozen different directors with a dozen different Blanche Debois & it’s invariably a success & often better than the original. Same with “Death of a Salesman.” Catch the structural flaws in the rehearsal.
