As an insomniac, I find wonderful films late at night on the television. “Girl with the Pearl Earring” was one of them. My husband and I have been to Delft; we have seen some of the Vermeer paintings. The film offered the viewer a look at the city, scene after scene, through Vermeer’s eyes.
The film “Girl with the Pearl Earring” was taken from the novel by Tracy Chevalier.
My newest novel, the ROMANTIC IMPEDIMENT, just now making the agent circuit, was inspired by the gorgeous 1871 Manet painting, “Interior at Arcachon,” 15 x 21. I spotted the postcard in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art gift shop, on their massive postcards-of-paintings wall. The card jumped out at me. I purchased it instantly, saying to myself, someday I will write a novel about these two people.
This must not be an uncommon phenomenon. After all, composers are inspired by music, paintings, etc. Case in point: “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini”.
